Maze amazement

Found this article at this source

VISITORS are advised to have the eyes of a hawk when it comes to navigating a two mile maize maze.

The giant puzzle at Camp Hill outdoor adventure park, near Bedale, involved planting more than 200,000 grains of maize over four acres of land.

It took 90 days to grow and the resulting maze contains more than two miles of pathways. It takes about an hour and a half to complete.

The labyrinth was planted in the shape of a giant bird of prey and was due to open today.

The designer, Louise Sampson, said: “I was more used to designing embroidery or knitting patterns.

“This had to be done on a massive scale. It took nearly three weeks to mark out the four acre field. We have created a lot more paths than other mazes.”

There will twice weekly falconry displays running alongside the new attraction.

The newly opened adventure park also includes quad bike rides, Segway tours and an adventure ropes course.

Worst joblessness statistics for nine months and gloomy manufacturing data send dollar and Wall Street tumbling

Americans hold up

Shares plunged on Wall Street and the dollar fell sharply tonight after an increase in jobless claims and weak signals from industry prompted fears that the US is heading for a double-dip recession.

The Dow Jones index fell 200 points at one stage in morning trading in New York after the US labour department reported that 500,000 new claims for unemployment benefit were filed in the week ending 14 August – an increase of 12,000 on the previous week and the highest figure for nine months.

The already gloomy mood was compounded when the Philadelphia Fed, one of the Federal Reserve's 12 regional reserve banks, published its monthly health check on manufacturing in America's mid-Atlantic region. The survey, seen by Wall Street as a barometer of US industrial conditions, showed activity had contracted unexpectedly for the first time since July 2009.

President Barack Obama called on Congress to pass a bill providing support for small businesses, but Wall Street believes the threat to the world's biggest economy will also require action by the Federal Reserve to expand the money supply through its quantitative easing programme. James Bullard, president of the St Louis Fed, said tonight that the central bank would need to step up its purchases of bonds should the threat of deflation intensify.

Iran will not back down in nuclear standoff: Ahmadinejad

QAZVIN - Iran will not step back an inch in its nuclear program, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in Qazvin on Monday.

No sanctions resolution can force Iran to relinquish its right to access to nuclear technology, he added.

The president stated that the imposition of sanctions on Iran has not only proven to be counterproductive but has actually helped the country consolidate its self-sufficiency.

Since they imposed sanctions on Iran in 2006, the country’s industrial exports have nearly tripled in Qazvin and some other provinces, he noted.

“If they step up their pressure now, our industrial complexes will be able to become competitive at the international level,” he added.

He also criticized .... (Read full article on Tehran Times)

The gathering storm in the Middle East is gaining momentum. War clouds are on the horizon and, as with conditions prior to World War I, all it takes for explosive action to commence is a trigger.

Turkey’s provocative flotilla—often described in Orwellian terms as a humanitarian mission—has set in motion a flurry of diplomatic activity, but if the Iranians send escort vessels for the next round of Turkish ships, it could present a casus belli.

It is also instructive that Syria is playing a dangerous game with both missile deployment and rearming Hezbollah. According to most public accounts, Hezbollah is sitting on 40,000 long-, medium- and short-range missiles and Syrian territory has served as a conduit for military material from Iran since the end of the 2006 Lebanon War.

Should Syria move its own scuds to (Click here to read the full article)

Hizbullah: Israel's gas belongs to us

Marine law expert Adv. Amir Cohen-Dor: The Dalit and Tamar gas fields are within Israel's economic zone.

Adi Ben-Israel and Uzi Blumer14 Jun 10 17:41

Hizbullah claims that that the natural gas fields recently discovered in the Mediterranean, belong to Lebanon and warned Israel against extracting gas from them. Iranian English language paper "Tehran Times" quotes Hezbollah's executive council chief Hashem Safieddine as saying that it would not allow Israel to loot Lebanese gas resources.

Earlier this week, Lebanese parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri told "AFP", “Israel is racing to make the case a fait accompli and was quick to present itself as an oil emirate, ignoring the fact that, according to the maps, the deposit extends into Lebanese waters. Lebanon must take immediate action to defend its financial, political, economic and sovereign rights."

Pressure to End Blockade May Stop Tunnel Smuggling

Sarah A. Topol

Sarah A. Topol Contributor

Smugglers in Egypt and Gaza worry their trade will be adversely affected by returning Palestinians lugging goods bought for cheaper prices in Egypt. They know a total termination of the blockade will spell the end of their industry.

"If the border opened, there won't be any tunnels," Abu Al-Amir, a tunnel worker in Gaza, said in a telephone interview with AOL News. "If the tunnels end, no one will work."

Al-Amir said nervous conversations about what will happen if the border stays open have rippled through the smuggling community in Gaza. Although his work has not been affected, Al-Amir said, "There are people who are afraid."

Right now, it's business as usual for many of Gaza's tunnels that ferry construction materials, something neither of the borders is allowing through.

Little did Justin Halpern know that his funny "Shit My Dad Says" Twitter postings would lead to a book deal and television show. Well, it did, and it's being picked up by CBS later this year, less than a year after securing a book deal.

Shit My Dad Says will star William Shatner as the father with a penchant for saying some really funny and weird stuff, like "We didn't accidentally kill a hooker, we had dinner!"

Halpern started the Twitter account to showcase the things his father would say to him, and the experiences they shared while living together in the same house.

Turkey's Erdogan bears responsibility in flotilla fiasco

WESTERN GOVERNMENTS have been right to be concerned about Israel's poor judgment and botched execution in the raid against the Free Gaza flotilla. But they ought to be at least as worried about the Turkish government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which since Monday has shown a sympathy toward Islamic militants and a penchant for grotesque demagoguery toward Israel that ought to be unacceptable for a member of NATO.

On the opposite page today, Turkey's ambassador to the United States makes the argument that Israel had no cause to clash with the "European lawmakers, journalists, business leaders and an 86-year-old Holocaust survivor" who were aboard the flotilla. But there...(read full article)

EU/IMF Greece Plan Sees Around EUR110 Billion In Funding Gap

BERLIN -(Dow Jones)- Greece faces a funding gap of around EUR110 billion over the next three years, according to the details of a bailout plan from the International Monetary Fund and the European Union seen by Dow Jones Newswires Sunday.

Earlier Sunday, Greek Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou said that the new measures imposed to secure access to the unprecedented bailout package are the harshest and most austere ever imposed in European history.

The plan, dated May 2, didn't give details of how much each euro-zone country and the IMF will give in loans.

"We anticipate covering the program's financing requirements with financial support from euro-area member states and the IMF while strengthening access to the private capital market," the document said.

"Notwithstanding the significant fiscal adjustment, we project a public financing gap of around 110 billion (euros), for the program period, which we expect to cover through matching bilateral lending support from euro area member states and through IMF support," said the plan.

California governor and Hummer aficionado Arnold Schwarzenegger hailed a 100-mpg hybrid version of the much-maligned SUV when it was unveiled Monday in Detroit.

The Raser H3 range-extended electric vehicle was among the vehicles Schwarzenegger checked out during the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress, where he called for a national energy policy that promotes efficient vehicles. The governor, a self-professed car lover who owns 12 vehicles, seemed impressed by what he saw.

"There is nothing wrong with the Hummer; it’s great vehicle," he said, according to The Detroit News. "We should change the technology within those vehicles."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Editorial cartoons on the middle east, Obamacare and Iran

***For Immediate Release***

April 19, 2010 - Tel Aviv, Israel - Cartoonist Yonatan Frimer has released a handful of editorial cartoons to help drum up publicity of his upcoming book. These cartoons may be published for no charge for editorial purposes.

Each of the cartoons is actually also a solvable maze, making them one of the few "interactive" forms of media that can be printed in traditional newspapers.

The cartoons can be viewed and downloaded at http://teamofmonkeys.com/press

About Team Of Monkeys
Team Of Monkeys is a cartoon created by Yonatan Frimer and RSL, two highly creative professionals that have made a living by poking fun at the ironies of society. In addition to carrying a complex message within the cartoons, each of the images is also a solvable maze, a feature that makes them ideal for reversing the declining market share of traditional newspapers. Both Frimer and RSL are based in Israel and have conflicting political views, making them able to cater to both the left, center and right political leanings.
